Abstract

Daily negative moods may affect late adolescents¡¯ mental health. This study focused on irritability and explored the composition of the feeling state. Thayer¡¯s mood theory was used as a theoretical framework. We conducted an online experiments with 150 participants, aged 18 to 24. Based on a semantic analysis of open-ended responses, we found that the status of irritability reflects two dimensions. One dimension is related to nervous conditions such as anger, dislike, disgust, and being provoked. The other dimension is associated with feelings of helplessness such as feeling subdued, depressed, or discouraged. The results underscore the importance of irritability in understanding late adolescents¡¯ daily mood for the overall purpose of mental health promotion. Practical implications and theoretical contributions are discussed.
